Herb Advantages

Recommended Natural Healing
Books and References

There are many good herbals that I could list as recommended natural healing books and references, and I own my share. (An "herbal" is a book describing the use of medicinal herbs.) Each and every one offers a unique perspective and usually some information not found anywhere else. In other words, I find them all valuable for one reason or another and will continue to add more as well as books on related subjects.

But, I have my favorites, the ones I turn to first, the ones I turn to again and again. Without question or qualification, these are my top recommended natural healing books on the use of medicinal herbs.

I am, however, a big fan of intuitive shopping. So if a particular book "falls into your hands" (so to speak), or spontaneously catches your attention and appeals to you for some other reason or none at all, by all means strongly consider buying it. It probably has just the information you need now or will need in the future. (There is some merit in using that method for choosing herbs for yourself, as well -- what grabs your attention, speaks to you, intrigues or delights you?)

My Top Three Herbals
The following three are my standard, couldn't live without herbals, my most important recommended natural healing books. I turn to them first and rely on them the most. They're oldies but goodies, and as testimony to their usefulness, still in print:

The Herb Book, John Lust, Bantam Books

The Way of Herbs, Michael Tierra, C.A., N.D., Pocket Books

Natural Healing with Herbs, Humbart Santillo, B.S., M.H., Hohm Press

Also Highly Recommended
I have to include the following three among my top recommended natural healing books because while they can't take the place of two or three really good, complete and thorough herbals such as those listed above, they are excellent references in their own right. In particular, they help augment one's understanding and knowledge of herbs, the body and its systems, and how nutrition can aid healing. I often consult Linda Page's book for a quick overview and then dig into my herbals. The other two are highly complementary to the overall effort.

How to Be Your Own Herbal Pharmacist, Linda Page, N.D., Ph.D., Healthy Healing Publications, 1991.

Prescription for Herbal Healing, Phyllis A. Balch, CNC, Avery, 2002

Prescription for Nutritional Healing, 3rd Edition, Phyllis A. Balch, CNC and James F. Balch, M.D., Avery, 2000.
